Several
months in hand to save a child
Dear readers,
Once again we want to make our frank acknowledgement to all
those who have sent money for treatment of children about whom we
told in our columns. We want to thank on our behalf and in the name
of parents of these children.
You not only provided pecuniary aid but also inspired confidence
that in our time there are people who can empathize, who are ready
to come to the rescue of a complete stranger at the most trying
moments not for the sake of benefit but for nothing, because someone
needs help. Our profound bow before you.
Today, we continue to publish information about children who need
aid.
Vanechka was brought into the world after seven months pregnancy.
Childbirth was difficult. Nobody believed that boy would survive.
No physician came up to the newborn for two hours, and no medical
aid was rendered. He simply lay on a big bed wrapped in a thing
cover. As a result - cruel disease, which name is meningitis. Vanechka
survived, but meningitis caused complications - hydrocephalus (dropsy
among the people). Water gathers in the child's brain. When Vanechka
was one year and four months old he had an operation for the first
time. Three litres of water were pumped out of his brains. Then
shunt was inserted - a device that evacuates water from brains into
intestine.
The boy had four operations with new shunts inserted. Every time
his parents were told "be ready", which meant that child
might not withstand another operation. And parents were ready. Some
time father gave way: he divorced, went away from home and abandoned
his son. Vanechka was left to live with his mother, Maria Poltoratskaya,
his mother's sister of sixteen years old, grandmother and grandfather
in the town of Oster, Chernihiv Region. But it is not a town - only
name: lavatory in the street, water in the street, heating - stove.
Last operation was performed at the Institute of Neurosurgery,
Kiev. The kid lay on the operating table six hours. After operation
it turned out that boy received blood poisoned with syphilis. But
Lord was gracious to the child - most part of the poisoned blood
poured out during intense postoperative bleeding. Vanechka did not
fall ill. His mother applied to court, public procurator's office
and deputies of local bodies. She was recommended not to ask for
trouble. A woman without husband, with a sick child in a strange
city… of course she did not insist.
Now, the boy is five and a half years old. He is an underdeveloped
child. Vanya cannot sit individually but he freely moves in a wheelchair.
His grandfather calls him "Schumacher" for hairpin bends
at turns. Vanechka already speaks, enjoys the companionship of other
children, smiles. Despite the difficulties in the start of his life,
he proved to be a cheerful child. Because of deformity of the skull
Vanya sees poorly, his lower eyelids close half of eyes. But he
takes no notice of it - he pulls back his lower eyelids with fingers.
It is very interesting to behold the world with open eyes. Vanya
even raised corns under his eyes!
And suddenly something happened with a device which pumps water
out of brains. Spasms which twist the whole body began with Vanya.
Sometimes it happens that they seize respiratory tracks, and then
Vanechka tries to drink air but he cannot do it. In order to avoid
spasms the boy is given a drug. Among side effects of this drug
are hair falling, injury of liver and kidneys. But it must be given,
or the child may lose his breath.
The shunt needs to be replaced, and again Vanya should be operated
on. After examination physicians told that there was metal in the
head. Before operation metal was absent… Perhaps it is merely a
coincidence, but after such coincidence and blood transfusion poisoned
with syphilis mother cannot bring her son to the Institute of Neurosurgery.
There is a clinic in Moscow in which foreign self-regulated shunt
can be inserted into Vanya's brains for all his life. And then it
won't be necessary to perform endless operations to replace this
device. Also, plastic operation, allowing to adjust the child's
skull, is possible there. After such operation the child has a chance
to live without constant wards, pains, spasms. But this operation
is very expensive - USD 4 000. And it can be performed with children
who are under six. There are about two months in hand to collect
the required amount…
Grandmother shakes her head. Of course, if it is impossible to
raise such money, she will have to apply to the Institute of Neurosurgery
again, where physicians don't want to see Vanechka after application
of his parents to court. In such case a new shunt will be inserted
that will require replacement after half a year, or so. And it is
endless. How many operations the child can withstand? Two, three…
Now, relatives of the boy seek aid from everywhere. In the name
of relatives we apply to all our readers: if you can, please, help
Vanechka to get chance for normal life. You may transfer your money
